An important facet of pneumastudio’s work is the relationship between research and practice. Much of the design work is experimental in terms of the exploration of new technologies, material and geometric systems, and a variety of discourses related to contemporary design culture. To this extent, pneumastudio’s work relies heavily on each principal’s on-going involvement in academia. Rather than isolate the space of practice from the space of research, pneumastudio takes advantage of the academy as a site for experimentation and innovation, learning from and incorporating discoveries made within the context of advanced design studios, research seminars, and technology courses. At the same time pneumastudio’s work helps to influence the direction of each principal’s academic research, pulling the realms of professional and academic practice into a mutual and dynamic feedback loop of influence and exchange in which ideas and innovations travel fluidly back and forth between both areas of work.
